Area Police
Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior representative commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
