Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
